NDLEA uncovers drugs hidden in vehicle side mirrors

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted another batch of illicit drugs cleverly concealed inside vehicle side mirrors, highlighting the increasingly desperate tactics employed by traffickers.

This was revealed on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“They’ve found another use for our vehicle side mirrors as discovered by NDLEA officers in one of our latest seizures,” Babafemi wrote. “Let’s be more careful.”

The discovery forms part of a worrying trend in which drug smugglers deploy unusual concealment techniques.

In recent months, the NDLEA has uncovered narcotics hidden in objects such as lipstick tubes, prayer beads, clothes hangers, and even sewn into the seams of dresses.

Reacting to the development, the agency reiterated its commitment to staying ahead of drug cartels through intensified surveillance and intelligence gathering at all entry and exit points across Nigeria.

“The traffickers may be devising new methods, but we are constantly adapting and enhancing our strategies to counter them,” an NDLEA official who spoke on condition of anonymity said. “Our officers are trained to detect even the most concealed contraband.”

The agency has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, stressing that drug trafficking poses a serious threat to national security and public health.
