The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Edo State Command, has announced the arrest of 44 suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of illicit substances weighing 2,059.83 kilograms in November.
State Commander, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, revealed this during a press conference on Thursday in Benin, noting that the intensified, intelligence-led operations were aimed at ensuring a safe and peaceful festive season across the state.
The 44 suspects, he added, consist of 21 men and 23 women a development he described as disturbing due to the increasing involvement of women in drug-related crimes.
“This is a negative development considering the strategic role of women in nation-building,” he cautioned.
Ofoyeju disclosed that the bulk of the confiscated drugs comprised 2,058.79 kg of cannabis, in addition to tramadol, methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, codeine-based cough syrup, flunitrazepam, diazepam, swinol and danabol (Molly).
He further reported that a 0.58-hectare cannabis plantation was recently discovered and destroyed by operatives in Igbeshi Forest, Imiakebo, Etsako West Local Government Area.
The farm was estimated to produce no less than 1,459.745 kg of cannabis.
“Our operations during the month under review have dealt significant blows to drug cartels.
“Forty-four suspects, both male and female, have been arrested, and substantial quantities of drugs weighing 2,059.83 kg were seized.
“This sends a clear message to those involved in the drug trade to either desist now or face the full might of the law,” he said.
According to the commander, the agency secured 17 convictions within the month, while 126 other cases remain before the Federal High Court in Benin.
He also noted that 21 individuals underwent counselling in November as part of NDLEA’s drug demand reduction initiative.
Despite obstacles posed by remote and rough terrains used for cultivating cannabis, Ofoyeju reiterated the command’s resolve to intensify enforcement efforts.
He appealed to the public to support the agency by reporting suspicious drug activities.
“We are determined to make Edo State unsafe for drug dealers.
“With the public’s cooperation, we will dismantle these networks and keep our communities secure,” he said.
