Naval Chief urges personnel to uphold professionalism, safeguard democracy

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has urged officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy to uphold professionalism and remain steadfast in their commitment to defending Nigeria’s democracy.

Vice Admiral Ogalla, represented by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Admiralty Integrated Farms Limited, Rear Admiral Julius Nwagu, gave the charge during the Second Quarter Route March held in Abuja on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Ogalla emphasized the importance of mental and physical readiness among naval personnel, noting that the route march was part of the Navy’s strategy to maintain operational efficiency.

“This exercise is not just a show of force but a deliberate effort to ensure our personnel remain mentally alert and physically fit to meet the evolving nature of security operations in our country,” he stated.

He added that such exercises foster unity, morale, and provide an avenue for personnel to relax and bond.

Ogalla urged officers to conduct themselves with integrity at all times. “I enjoin you to be more professional in the conduct of your duties and daily activities,” he said. “Avoid any acts of misconduct or actions that could tarnish the image of the Nigerian Navy.”

The Naval Chief also emphasized the service’s dedication to upholding democratic values and protecting constitutional authority. “I charge you all to show unwavering support for our democracy and constituted authority,” he declared.

He assured the personnel of continued support from the Navy leadership to enable them perform their duties effectively. “We remain committed to providing all necessary resources to ensure you function optimally in your respective roles,” he added.

Highlighting the Navy’s critical role in national and regional security, Ogalla noted that the service is responsible for safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and contributes significantly to security in the Gulf of Guinea.

“Our participation in regional operations such as the recently concluded Operation Obangame Express reflects our commitment to maritime security and partnership with global stakeholders,” he said.

He concluded by reiterating that the Nigerian Navy would continue to prioritise fitness and preparedness as key components of operational readiness both on land and at sea.

“The successes recorded in our national security efforts can be attributed in part to the physical and mental preparedness of our personnel. This is why exercises like the route march remain a vital aspect of our routine,” he said.
