In a bid to improve the learning environment in public primary schools across Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule has approved the procurement of 15,716 chairs and desks for schools in the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.
The Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Dr. Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, disclosed this during a media briefing in Lafia on Wednesday.
He said the intervention followed his frequent unannounced visits to schools, where he personally witnessed the poor condition of classroom furniture.
“I went to several schools and saw pupils either sitting on the floor or standing during lessons. In some classes, there were no chairs at all. In others, the few available ones were broken, leaving children to sit on scraps of furniture or lean against walls,” he said.
Moved by the dire situation, Muhammed-Kassim said he reported his findings to the governor, who responded immediately by approving the contract for the furniture supply.
“The governor didn’t waste time. He approved the contract for 15,716 desks and chairs and directed that they be delivered within the next month,” he stated.
He commended Governor Sule for responding swiftly to the plight of the pupils and reiterated his commitment to revamping the basic education sector in the state.
“Governor Sule has demonstrated once again that he is passionate about education. I’m grateful for his support, and I promise to work in line with his vision to transform our basic education system,” the SUBEB chairman added.
Muhammed-Kassim described basic education as the foundation of societal development, saying that poor infrastructure should not be allowed to threaten the future of young learners.
“I am not a desk-bound chairman,” he asserted. “I am committed to going into the field, seeing the problems firsthand, and ensuring we fix them. It is possible to change the story of public schools in Nasarawa State, and with this support, we are on the right path.”
