The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has called for the accelerated delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters being acquired by Nigeria from the United States, stressing the need for their swift deployment to bolster ongoing security operations across the country.

During a high-level Programme Management Review Meeting held in San Diego, California, from June 9 to 13, 2025, Abubakar emphasized the urgency of finalizing the acquisition and ensuring the timely integration of the combat helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force’s operations.

“We deeply appreciate the United States Government for its continued strategic partnership. The prompt delivery of these platforms is crucial to our mission readiness and counter-terrorism efforts,” he said.

According to a statement issued by NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the meeting brought together senior U.S. officials and representatives of Bell Textron, manufacturers of the AH-1Z Viper, to assess progress and refine timelines on the procurement.

Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the precision strike capabilities, survivability, and advanced avionics of the AH-1Z helicopters would greatly improve Nigeria’s operational edge in various theatres of conflict.

“The Vipers will enhance our combat capabilities significantly. We are committed to taking every step necessary to ensure a smooth procurement and integration process,” he added.

As part of his visit, the Air Chief also toured Camp Pendleton and held strategic engagements with senior officers of the U.S. Marine Corps.

There, he observed the AH-1Z platforms currently operated by Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39.

“This visit offered us a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insights into best practices for operating, maintaining, and sustaining the Viper helicopters,” Abubakar noted.

He assured that the helicopters, once delivered, would be deployed responsibly and strategically to combat insurgency, banditry, and other criminal activities undermining national peace.

“Our aim remains clear: to restore lasting peace and safeguard the lives and properties of Nigerians in accordance with international rules of engagement,” he said.

Air Marshal Abubakar also extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support for the Nigerian Air Force, noting that the acquisition reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening national security infrastructure.
