AC Milan announced on Thursday that they have decided to part ways with their Portuguese head coach Sergio Conceicao, who joined the club last December and guided them to an eighth-place finish in Serie A.

In a brief statement on their official website, the club said, “AC Milan and Sergio Conceicao will not continue their journey together next season.”

They added, “The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism and dedication shown during their time leading the First Team over the past few months.”

Italian media have speculated about a possible return of Massimiliano Allegri to Milan.

The 57-year-old coach previously won the Serie A title with Milan in 2011 during his first spell at the club and later secured five more league trophies across two tenures at Juventus.

Conceicao, who previously played for Inter Milan and Lazio, had signed a contract intended to last through next season.

However, speculation about his potential departure increased after Milan remained in eighth place in Serie A.

He started his tenure by winning the Italian Super Cup, taking over from the dismissed Paulo Fonseca, and then led Milan to the Italian Cup final, where they were narrowly defeated 1-0 by Bologna on May 14.

During his time in charge, Conceicao, 50, won 16 of 31 matches with Milan, clinching 11 victories, suffering seven defeats, and drawing three games in the league. He inherited a team already in eighth place and ended the campaign in the same position.

Reflecting on the disappointing season after the cup final loss, defender Matteo Gabbia said, “Quite simply it’s been a bad season. We weren’t able to give our best. We were hoping for more, better from a team given how much talent it has.”
