Italian giants AC Milan have parted ways with head coach Massimiliano Allegri and several senior boardroom figures following another underwhelming season.
The club announced on Monday that chief executive officer Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada had also been dismissed as part of a major restructuring at San Siro.
In a statement released by ownership group RedBird Capital Partners, the club admitted that the campaign ended far below expectations despite spending much of the season in contention near the top of the Serie A standings.
“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,” RedBird Capital Partners said in a statement.
“The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure.”
Milan’s disappointing run-in culminated in a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari on Sunday, a result that confirmed a fifth-place finish in Serie A.
The Rossoneri narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification and will instead compete in the Europa League next season.
It will mark the second straight campaign without Europe’s elite club competition for the seven-time European champions.
The club hierarchy had reportedly set a minimum target of securing Champions League qualification while remaining competitive in the Serie A title race, objectives that ultimately were not achieved.
Meanwhile, former Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who currently serves in an advisory role, survived the sweeping changes despite growing frustration from supporters over the club’s recent direction.
According to transfer insider Nicolo Schira, Ibrahimovic is expected to remain influential behind the scenes and will play a key role in appointing Milan’s next sporting director and head coach.
