Meta names ex-Trump advisor as president, vice chair

Meta has named veteran banker, Dina Powell McCormick, as its new president and vice chairman, bringing a former Trump administration official into a top leadership role as the company ramps up spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Powell McCormick, who previously served on Meta’s board, will now join the company’s management team.

Her appointment comes as Meta expands what founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg described as “the massive physical and financial model that will power the next decade of computing.”

Announcing the move, Zuckerberg said Powell McCormick’s background makes her a strong fit for the company’s next growth phase.

“Dina’s experience at the highest levels of global finance, combined with her deep relationships around the world, makes her uniquely suited to help Meta manage this next phase of growth,” he said.

In a separate post, Zuckerberg added that Powell McCormick “will be involved in all of Meta’s work, with a particular focus on partnering with governments and sovereigns to build, deploy, invest in, and finance Meta’s AI and infrastructure.”

Her appointment coincides with Meta’s accelerated push into AI, including heavy investments in data centres and energy resources needed to support large-scale computing.

Powell McCormick’s extensive banking career is expected to play a central role in shaping Meta’s AI infrastructure strategy.

She will oversee the company’s multi-billion-dollar investments in the sector and help develop partnerships aimed at boosting Meta’s investment capacity as competition among big tech firms intensifies.

An Egyptian-American, Powell McCormick spent 16 years at Goldman Sachs, where she was a partner, a member of the management committee and head of the firm’s global sovereign investment banking business.

Her experience is particularly relevant as sovereign wealth funds, especially from the Middle East, emerge as major backers of global AI infrastructure projects.

Most recently, she worked at BDT & MSD Partners, an advisory firm that has reportedly been involved in efforts to line up US investors for TikTok, according to Axios.

Her hiring also underscores Zuckerberg’s increasingly visible political shift to the right. Powell McCormick, a Republican, is among the most prominent political figures to join Meta since former chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, who previously served in the Clinton administration and left the company in 2022.

In recent months, Zuckerberg has moved closer to President Donald Trump and conservative positions, ending third-party fact-checking, rolling back diversity initiatives and adopting what critics describe as a more traditionally masculine public image.

Trump welcomed the appointment, congratulating Powell McCormick in a social media post and describing her as “a fantastic, and very talented, person, who served the Trump Administration with strength and distinction.”

During Trump’s first term, Powell McCormick served as deputy national security adviser, where she played a key role in shaping US foreign policy. She is married to Pennsylvania Republican Senator Dave McCormick.
