Man Utd will be better without Fernandes as captain – Ex-Liverpool star

Former Liverpool striker, John Aldridge, has taken a swipe at Bruno Fernandes, labelling the Manchester United skipper “childish” and unworthy of the captain’s armband at Old Trafford.

Aldridge, speaking to Mirror, argued that it was an insult to the legacy of United’s legendary leaders such as Bryan Robson and Roy Keane that Fernandes is entrusted with the role.

“Manchester United would be a better side if Bruno Fernandes wasn’t their captain,” Aldridge said. “Compared to the greats who wore that armband, it’s disgraceful. He’s petulant, always moaning, and I honestly don’t know how referees haven’t sent him off. If it were me officiating, I’d caution him every time he whinged.”

The ex-Anfield star added that while Liverpool’s rivalry with United has always been intense, he had respect for past United players who carried themselves with dignity, something he feels Fernandes lacks.

“The way he behaves sums up United’s struggles in recent years. Get a proper leader in that dressing room and you’ll see an immediate improvement,” Aldridge insisted.

Turning his attention to the dugout, Aldridge also questioned the long-term prospects of new boss Ruben Amorim, describing his future as “a toss of a coin.”

“Amorim comes across as a likeable figure and handles the media well, but that only gets you so far when you’re managing a club the size of United,” he noted. “Yes, they’ve brought in good players like Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, and the squad looks more balanced, but there are still big question marks. Time will tell if he’s the man to turn things around.”
