Manchester United have reportedly reached a decision on manager Ruben Amorim’s future following their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night.
The loss at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao capped a miserable campaign for United, whose season has been marred by poor form across all competitions.
With Champions League qualification on the line, both Amorim and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou faced immense pressure to deliver silverware.
Yet, despite the disappointment, United have opted not to part ways with Amorim.
According to The Times, the club had already resolved to retain Amorim as manager before the final, regardless of the outcome.
“Unless Amorim walks away, he will be in the United dugout once again next season, with his job under no threat at all,” the report stated.
Even if the Portuguese tactician were to consider leaving this summer, it is believed that INEOS chairman and United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe would make a concerted effort to persuade him to stay, as he holds Amorim in high regard.
Since taking over in November, Amorim has endured a tough stint at the helm, managing just six league victories while recording six draws and 13 losses.
It’s statistically the club’s worst season since the Premier League’s inception in 1992.
Manchester United currently sit near the bottom of the table, either in 16th or 17th place and are set to conclude their campaign at Old Trafford against Aston Villa.
A defeat in that match could see them finish with just 39 points, a total that would have led to relegation in at least three past seasons.
