The Kebbi State Police Command has apprehended 30-year-old Bello Amakwa in connection with the alleged murder of Auwal Umaru, a resident of Katami village in Sokoto State’s Silami Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Nafi’u Abubakar disclosed this in a Monday statement issued in Birnin Kebbi, detailing that officers responded to a July 21 distress call at 8am about a victim found bleeding behind Central Market.
“Upon receiving the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Central Market, mobilized a team of policemen and vigilantes to the scene and evacuated the victim to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where a medical practitioner certified the victim dead,” Abubakar stated.
The suspect reportedly confessed during interrogation to stabbing Umaru during a 2:30am altercation. “In the course of preliminary investigation, the suspect confessed to having stabbed the deceased with a knife on his neck as a result of a mere argument,” the police spokesperson revealed.
Authorities have recovered the murder weapon and other evidentiary items. Police Commissioner Bello Sani urged youths to avoid violent confrontations, with Abubakar relaying: “He appealed to youths not to resort to self-help when aggrieved, but rather to seek redress through appropriate channels.”
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for comprehensive investigation and prosecution.
