A man identified as Ope Adeniran has been arrested for violating Lagos State’s environmental laws after he was caught defecating in public along the Oba Akran Bridge in Ikeja.

The arrest was carried out on Wednesday by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps as part of the government’s broader initiative to enforce environmental hygiene standards across the state.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect will face prosecution in line with the state’s environmental statutes.

“Adeniran was arrested on Wednesday, July 9, contravening the laws of the state and will be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant environmental laws of Lagos State,” Wahab said.

According to the commissioner, Adeniran was apprehended in the act by LAGESC officials stationed in the area.

Wahab expressed worry over the continued flouting of environmental sanitation laws by some residents, warning that such conduct hampers the state government’s mission to keep the environment safe and sanitary.

He issued a stern warning to would-be violators, saying the government would not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law.

He also hinted that more stringent enforcement measures may be introduced to curb similar infractions in the future.
