The Government of Malawi has issued a strong denial over viral claims that the country’s president congratulated Arsenal for winning the Premier League title, describing the message as fake and misleading.
The Gunners were officially crowned champions on Tuesday night after Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, a result that confirmed Arsenal’s first league title since the 2003–04 “Invincibles” season.
Following the historic achievement, Arsenal supporters gathered at the Emirates Stadium to celebrate, while players including Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice were reportedly seen outside the stadium in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Amid the celebrations, a message circulating on social media claimed to be from Malawi’s President, Arthur Mutharika, congratulating Arsenal on their triumph.
However, the Malawian government has dismissed the post as false and warned that it amounts to misuse of the president’s name.
In its statement, the government said, “The Government wishes to clarify that His Excellency the State President, Professor Arthur Mutharika, has not issued a congratulatory message for Arsenal Football Club for winning the 2025/26 English Premier League contrary to a poster making rounds on social media.”
It further added: “The congratulatory message is false, malicious, disrespectful and trivializing the Presidency.”
The statement continued, “The Government, therefore, demands the author of the poster to remove the name of the State President Professor Arthur Mutharika from the list of those sending their congratulatory messages.”
It also warned of consequences, stating, “The Government further warns the public that using someone’s name, let alone the President’s name, without their consent is a violation of the law.”
“Offenders, once identified, will face full legal prosecution, which may result in substantial fines or imprisonment.”
Following Arsenal’s title win, several public figures also reacted. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated the club, posting on X: “22 long years for the Arsenal. But finally, we’re back where we belong. Champions!”
Meanwhile, outspoken Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan also reacted on social media, posting: “5 times the bridesmaid. Tonight, finally, THE BRIDE.”
He also appeared on talkSPORT, where he called for a response from pundit Gabby Agbonlahor, saying, “Gabby, what about a public apology to me and Arsenal fans,” following the club’s title success.
