Makoko demolition aimed at citizen safety, not land grabbing – Lagos govt

The Lagos State Government has clarified that the ongoing demolition and structural removal in Makoko is primarily intended to protect the lives of residents, dispelling claims that the exercise is motivated by land acquisition.

Special Adviser on Urban Development and E-GIS to the Governor, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, explained this during a press briefing on Monday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa-Ikeja.

“The structures we are removing are located directly under high-tension electricity poles, which pose serious risks to human life,” Babatunde said.

“Our priority is the safety of the citizens, and this is not unique to Makoko. Similar interventions are ongoing across the state wherever hazards exist.”

He added that the redevelopment of the remaining parts of Makoko, where residents continue to live, will be carried out in phases with careful consideration for the convenience and welfare of the community.

“We are mindful of human convenience in every stage of development,” he emphasized.

Babatunde also highlighted that urban regeneration in Lagos extends beyond Makoko and Oworonshoki, citing other areas such as Pelewura, Kantangowa, and Oko-Baba as examples of past and ongoing efforts.

“This is not a new initiative,” he said. “The removal of dangerous structures has been ongoing over several administrations, and our goal remains to maintain order and ensure Lagos remains a safe, livable city for all residents.”
