Lookman rejects Atalanta contract, pushes for Inter move

Super Eagles forward, Ademola Lookman, has rejected Atalanta’s contract extension as he remains keen on securing a move to Inter Milan, according to Sempre Inter.

Reports from Sky Sport via FCInter1908 suggest Atalanta’s final attempt to convince the 27-year-old to stay ultimately fell short.

Faced with the possibility of losing one of their key players, Atalanta made a late push to retain Lookman by matching the offer tabled by Inter.

“Indeed, they decided to match Inter’s contract offer, hoping it would change the 27-year-old’s mind.”

But the Nigerian international seems resolute in his decision.

“However, Lookman has set his heart on joining Inter.”

With the winger snubbing their latest proposal, Atalanta are now in a tight spot.

With Inter pushing hard for the transfer, Atalanta’s options have become increasingly limited.

“Indeed, Ivan Juric’s men have their options limited amid Inter’s determined approach.”

Although the Italian champions previously saw their €40 million bid rejected, the deal now appears all but sealed.

“Despite failing to sign the Nigerian with a €40 million bid, the transfer has now become a near-certainty.”

Negotiations are expected to continue, as Inter may return with an improved offer.

“Though Inter would likely have to increase their offer as Lookman’s move feels like a matter of time.”

Once Lookman’s deal is finalized, Inter could shift focus to bolstering their defense with a move for Parma youngster Giovanni Leoni.

“The young defender could be Inter’s final coup this summer.”

Lookman played a central role in Atalanta’s historic Europa League triumph in the 2023/24 season, netting a remarkable hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the final to seal a 3-0 victory, the club’s first-ever European title.

Earlier in the year, he was also instrumental in Nigeria’s run to the final of AFCON 2023, where they fell 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire.

His stellar displays at both club and international level earned him the prestigious 2024 African Player of the Year award.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan are looking to bounce back next season after a disappointing end to the previous campaign.

The Nerazzurri were thumped 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final and failed to make an impression at the newly structured FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
