In a renewed effort to combat street crime and illegal settlements, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit has apprehended 49 individuals during a midnight raid in Victoria Island.

The operation, which commenced at about 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, was led by the agency’s Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele.

The team targeted areas such as Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and surrounding communities believed to be harboring criminal elements.

According to Akerele, the raid was prompted by intelligence reports and complaints from residents regarding frequent disturbances and criminal activities in the area.

“Our mission is clear — to rid Lagos of criminal hideouts that endanger public peace,” Akerele said. “Those who threaten the security of our communities must either reform or be ready to face legal consequences.”

Of the 49 people arrested during the operation, 48 were male and one was female. Akerele confirmed that all suspects have been charged in accordance with the state’s laws.

He added that the taskforce now conducts regular enforcement activities at least three times weekly to clamp down on crime and ensure cleaner, safer neighborhoods.

“We are committed to creating a Lagos that is safe, orderly, and conducive for all residents. No illegal activity will be tolerated,” Akerele stressed.

The operation underscores the Lagos State Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance urban safety and discourage the emergence of unlawful settlements across the city.
