Lagos makes LASRRA number mandatory for school admission

The Lagos State Government has directed all public and private schools to make Lagos State Residents Registration Agency registration a compulsory requirement for learner enrolment from the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Punch reported that the directive takes effect from Monday, September 14, 2026, according to a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Adepeju Adeyemi, and made available to PUNCH Online on Friday.

Under the new policy, schools are required to collect and document the valid LASRRA registration number of every learner during the admission and enrolment process.

The directive was approved by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun, and is being implemented through the OEQA.

The government said the initiative was designed to create a comprehensive and verifiable database of learners across Lagos State, which would support better planning, monitoring and delivery of educational services.

According to the statement, the commissioner said including learners in the LASRRA database would strengthen school record-keeping, improve identification and verification, facilitate tracking and give government agencies reliable data for evidence-based decisions.

Schools have also been instructed to incorporate each learner’s LASRRA number into their admission and other school records while informing parents and guardians about the new requirement.

Parents whose children or wards have not yet registered with LASRRA are expected to complete the process before the new academic session begins.

Adeyemi said, “Under the new arrangement, schools have been directed to include each learner’s LASRRA registration number in admission and school records and to sensitise parents and guardians on the requirement.

“Schools are also expected to advise parents whose children or wards are yet to register with LASRRA to complete the process ahead of the new academic session.”

The state government, however, directed schools to protect learners’ personal information and ensure that such data was handled securely and confidentially in accordance with applicable data protection requirements.

The Director-General of the OEQA, Dr Sulaimon Olagoke Ogunmuyiwa, said his office would work with LASRRA and other relevant agencies to establish procedures for generating and assigning unique PINs to learners.

He added that schools, parents, guardians and learners would receive sensitisation, registration and verification support as part of the implementation process.

Ogunmuyiwa further stated that compliance with the directive would be incorporated into the OEQA’s monitoring and quality-assurance activities in both public and private schools.

He urged parents, guardians and school proprietors to ensure that learners are registered with LASRRA before the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session.

The development comes days after LASRRA warned its registration agents against demanding payment from residents, stressing that registration was free.

The agency’s General Manager, Bilikis Adebiyi-Abiola, also appealed to residents to report any registration agent who requests money for the exercise.
