The Lagos State Government has rolled out a digital house-numbering system under the Lagos Identity Project to enhance property identification and improve service delivery across the state.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Alausa on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Enterprise Geographic Information System, Dr. Olajide Babajide, explained that the initiative is designed to modernize property data management and improve emergency response and urban planning.
“This project is about providing Lagosians with world-class services they truly deserve,” Babajide said, adding that the digital plates will feature QR codes and colour codes based on local government areas. These features will make it easier for residents, emergency responders, and utility providers to access accurate location information.
Babajide noted that the system will help tackle issues such as tax evasion and untraceable addresses.
“With this, scanning a QR code on a building provides essential information that supports planning and reduces fraud, particularly in rental transactions,” he stated.
The digital system is currently being piloted in Eti-Osa Local Government Area and will be extended to all 57 Local Government and Local Council Development Areas following the pilot phase.
Developed in partnership with Interspatial, a tech firm that carried out a two-year aerial mapping exercise in Lagos, the project introduces a standardized civic addressing format in line with global data protection and identification standards.
Babajide emphasized the government’s financial commitment to the initiative, describing it as a long-term investment in smart urban infrastructure.
“Technology costs money, and this investment shows the government’s will to improve planning and services,” he added.
Yinka Adesiyan, a technical partner on the project, highlighted the system’s security and logistical benefits.
“This goes beyond numbering homes. It enhances safety, transparency, and infrastructure planning,” he said, noting that the system also includes a Know Your Customer (KYC) feature.
