Lagos impounds 64 bikes, arrests 53 in fresh crackdown

The Lagos State Task Force has impounded 64 commercial motorcycles and arrested 53 suspected criminals during a large-scale operation across the state.

The Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Transportation, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the exercise was part of the state government’s sustained efforts to enhance safety and curb lawlessness on Lagos roads.

According to her, the operation, conducted on Monday, targeted unregulated motorcycle operations, street trading, and illegal park activities across several areas including Ebute Metta, Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos-Badagry Expressway, and parts of Surulere.

“The clean-up exercise commenced around 11 a.m. and covered key locations such as Apapa Road, Murtala Mohammed Way, Herbert Macaulay Road, Western Avenue, Iganmu Roundabout, Eric Moore Road, Bode Thomas, Babs Animashaun, and Ogunlana Drive,” Ogunlola said.

She added that enforcement teams also extended the raid to Itire Link Bridge, Muyiwa Opaleye Street, Odo-Olowu, Gbagada-Anthony Expressway, Ikorodu Road, 2nd Rainbow, and Alakija, among others.

Ogunlola explained that the removal of commercial motorcycles from these routes has helped restore order and ease vehicular movement.

“The enforcement exercise has significantly reduced obstruction on highways and improved traffic flow. It is part of our commitment to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly environment in Lagos,” she stated.

She reaffirmed that the enforcement aligns with the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, which prohibits commercial motorcycle operations on certain highways and major routes across the state.

Ogunlola urged residents to comply with the law and support the government’s efforts to ensure sanity on the roads, warning that defaulters would face legal consequences.

The task force also reiterated that similar exercises would continue in other parts of the state as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and security.
