The Lagos State Government is set to arraign 62 individuals—comprising 59 men and three women—who were apprehended during a coordinated midnight operation on Lagos Island.
The raid, carried out by the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce in the early hours of Friday, is part of a broader effort to restore law and order across key parts of the city.
The operation began at approximately 1:30 a.m. and covered major locations such as Victoria Island, Falomo, the Eko Hotel axis, Osborne, and several adjoining streets.
Speaking on the operation, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the crackdown was aimed at reclaiming public spaces and curbing the rise in anti-social activities across the state.
“In continuation of the agency’s clean-up enforcement operations to rid the state of criminal elements, the taskforce embarked on a strategic sweep of Lagos Island at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday,” Wahab announced via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.
He explained that the exercise targeted hotspots where the presence of “undesirable elements” had been increasingly observed.
“Sanity was restored in all areas visited during the operation. A total of 62 individuals were arrested and will be charged to court accordingly,” Wahab stated.
According to him, the taskforce remains committed to ensuring that public spaces are safe and free from threats to residents and businesses.
“This is not just a clean-up exercise, it is a deliberate strategy to enforce environmental and public safety laws while encouraging lawful behavior in our communities,” he added.
The Commissioner emphasized that the government will continue similar enforcement operations in other parts of the state to deter unlawful occupation and activities.
