The Lagos State Government has confirmed that 17 residents have been convicted by a magistrate court for engaging in open defecation and urination in public spaces.
In a statement posted on the state’s verified X account on Saturday, officials said the offenders were arrested during enforcement operations carried out by the Lagos Waste Management Authority.
The individuals were later arraigned before the Magistrate Court, Bolade, where each was handed a fine of ₦40,000 or an alternative sentence of one month imprisonment.
According to the government’s statement, “Seventeen environmental offenders apprehended by LAWMA were arraigned for urinating and defecating in open spaces.
The defendants were convicted and sentenced to a fine of ₦40,000 each or one month imprisonment.”
The state condemned the behaviour, stressing that such acts undermine efforts to maintain a clean and dignified urban environment.
“These acts have never been acceptable, as they degrade public spaces and deface our megacity,” the government said.
Officials also reiterated their commitment to strict enforcement of sanitation laws, adding that maintaining a hygienic city requires collective responsibility.
“The government remains resolute and will continue to clamp down on defaulters to ensure a cleaner, healthier Lagos for all,” the statement added.
