Lagos State has officially entered the race to host the 2026 National Youth Games, signaling its intent to bring the prestigious youth sporting event to Nigeria’s bustling commercial and cultural hub.
The bid, endorsed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reflects the state’s strategic focus on harnessing youth potential through sports development.
By signing the expression of interest, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos’ vision of becoming a leading force in youth empowerment and athletic excellence.
A statement submitted with the bid read, “With Lagos being Nigeria’s foremost economic and cultural epicenter, the State is committed to fostering sporting excellence and nurturing youth talent across the nation.”
The document also highlighted Lagos’ pedigree in hosting large-scale sporting events and its readiness to deliver on the scale of the National Youth Games.
“Our state boasts a commendable legacy of successfully hosting national and international sporting events. With world-class facilities such as the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Mobolaji Johnson Arena, and Rowe Park, coupled with a robust accommodation landscape and an efficient transport network, Lagos is exceptionally equipped to deliver a seamless and memorable event for athletes, officials, and guests alike,” the statement added.
The bid was formally submitted on behalf of the Lagos State Government by a delegation led by Hon. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission.
He was accompanied by Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih, Director of Sports; Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Director of School Sports; and Mr. Dare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports.
The National Youth Games is a flagship multi-sport competition aimed at identifying and nurturing young talents capable of representing Nigeria on global platforms.
In the last edition held in 2024 at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Team Delta claimed the top spot with an impressive haul of 111 medals, 46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze.
