Lagos begins compensation for Oworonshoki demolition victims

The Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency has commenced the payment of compensation to verified residents of the Oworonshoki community in Kosofe Local Government Area, whose buildings were pulled down during recent clearance operations.

The PUNCH reported that the exercise, which kicked off on October 23, took place at the palace of the Oworonshoki traditional ruler. It was witnessed by community leaders, LASURA officials, representatives of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, and members of civil society organisations.

The development follows last month’s protests by aggrieved residents who blocked the Third Mainland Bridge in response to the demolitions.

On October 17, 2025, protesters also marched to the Lagos State House of Assembly, calling for compensation and an end to the demolition of homes.

Speaking with Saturday PUNCH, LASURA’s Director-General, Oladimeji Animashaun, confirmed that some residents had already received their cheques between Thursday and Friday.

He said, “We started the payment of compensation yesterday (Thursday), and several residents have received their cheques.

“The total number of people being compensated is 80. This is proof that what Mr. Governor promised has been fulfilled.

“Someone with a bungalow cannot get the same compensation as someone with a storey building. The payments were fair, and you could see smiles on people’s faces as they received their cheques.”

Animashaun refuted claims that the demolition was carried out without prior notice, explaining that the community had been marked as a regeneration zone for over five years.

According to him, the government’s goal is to redevelop the area into a well-structured, modern neighbourhood with better living conditions for residents.

Also speaking at the event, Okanlawon Sanni, the member representing Kosofe Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, described the initiative as “a practical demonstration of Sanwo-Olu’s compassion and commitment to urban renewal with a human face.”
