The Lagos State House of Assembly has announced new security measures ahead of its plenary session on Monday, aiming to tighten security in light of the ongoing controversy surrounding the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
According to a notice signed by Omotayo Adekemi on behalf of Acting Clerk Taiwo Ottun, all staff members and legislative aides will be required to present valid identity cards to access the Assembly premises. The notice emphasized that no one would be allowed entry without proper identification.
The Lagos State Police Command has also pledged to maintain order at the Assembly complex, regardless of the situation.
This move follows the impeachment of Obasa on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial mismanagement. Obasa was replaced by the Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda. Since the impeachment, the former speaker has broken his silence, insisting that he remains the legitimate speaker until the proper legal process is followed.
Monday’s plenary session will be the third under Meranda’s leadership, with Obasa absent from the last two sittings. His supporters continue to challenge the impeachment.
Despite the tense atmosphere, the Assembly remains calm as it prepares to resume its activities.
