Kylian Mbappe kept his hopes alive in the race for La Liga’s Golden Boot, while Jude Bellingham wrapped up the win late on as Real Madrid eventually overcame a stubborn nine-man Sevilla side with a 2-0 victory on Sunday under Carlo Ancelotti.
Sevilla set out with a clear defensive game plan, frustrating Madrid throughout. The visitors were reduced to 10 men early, as Loic Bade was sent off just 12 minutes in for hauling down Mbappe on a breakaway.
A lengthy VAR review confirmed the red card, despite heavy protests from Sevilla. Mbappe came close to breaking the deadlock in the first half but failed to convert, dragging his shot wide.
The second half saw a livelier Madrid performance, aided by another red card for Sevilla. Substitute Isaac Romero was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Aurelien Tchouameni, leaving the away side with nine men.
The breakthrough soon followed, with Mbappe curling a precise strike from outside the area into the bottom corner.
Bellingham then made it two in the 87th minute, tapping into an empty net after a smart assist from Gonzalo Garcia.
Though Madrid have already surrendered the La Liga title to Barcelona – reflected in their somewhat lethargic display – this win added a few more points to the tally, for whatever that’s worth.
