La Liga: Barcelona end season with win over Bilbao

Barcelona wrapped up their LaLiga season in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over Athletic Club on Sunday, thanks to a quick-fire brace from Robert Lewandowski and a late penalty by Dani Olmo at San Mames.

With the league title already secured over a week ago, the final match held little significance in terms of standings, yet Barcelona still delivered a dominant performance to close out the campaign.

The Catalan giants finished top of the table with 88 points, staying four clear of rivals Real Madrid.

Atletico Madrid secured third place with 76 points, while Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal completed the top five, sealing their Champions League spots for next season.

Real Betis and Celta Vigo claimed the Europa League berths, while Rayo Vallecano, who ended the season in eighth, secured a place in the Europa Conference League.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick rotated his squad for the season finale, resting regulars including first-choice goalkeepers Wojciech Szczesny and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

As a result, third-choice Inaki Pena was handed a rare start, his first in over four months.

But it was Lewandowski who stole the spotlight early on. In the 14th minute, the Polish striker latched onto a perfect through ball from Fermin Lopez, timing his run to beat the offside trap before delicately lifting the ball over goalkeeper Unai Simon.

Just four minutes later, he struck again—this time with a powerful header from a corner, capitalizing on a botched clearance by Athletic’s Unai Gomez to double the lead.

Lewandowski came close to a hat-trick early in the second half but was unable to convert, ultimately finishing the season with 27 goals, second only to Kylian Mbappe’s 31 in the La Liga scoring charts.

Barcelona’s third came in stoppage time when Olmo was brought down in the box. With Lewandowski already subbed off minutes earlier, the Spanish international stepped up and calmly slotted home from the spot to seal the win.

“We knew it was the last game of the season and we had a plan to win it; we played well in the first half, we had everything under control all the way. It’s almost the perfect season. Now let’s enjoy the moment,” Lewandowski told Movistar Plus.
