La Liga: Atletico Madrid miss chance to go top after Celta Vigo draw

1 Min Read

Atletico Madrid squandered a prime opportunity to seize the top spot in LaLiga after settling for a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo at the Metropolitano on Saturday.

Diego Simeone’s men faced adversity almost immediately, as Pablo Barrios received a straight red card just four minutes into the match for a reckless studs-up challenge on Pablo Duran.

Their troubles deepened in the second half when Robin Le Normand brought down Borja Iglesias inside the box, prompting the referee to award Celta a penalty.

Iago Aspas calmly slotted home from the spot in the 68th minute, handing the visitors the lead.

However, Atletico found a way back late in the game. Substitute Alexander Sorloth finished off a swift counter-attack in the 81st minute, ensuring the hosts salvaged a crucial point.

With the draw, Atletico sit one point behind league leaders Real Madrid, who were also held to a 1-1 draw by Osasuna earlier in the day, after 24 rounds of action.

Barcelona, currently third with 48 points, have a chance to claim the top spot with a victory over Rayo Vallecano on Monday.

Celta, on the other hand, remain in 12th place with 29 points.
