La Liga: Aspas fires Celta Vigo to Europa League spot

Celta Vigo secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Getafe in their final La Liga fixture, clinching a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League thanks to a late strike from club icon Iago Aspas.

The hosts initially took the lead through Borja Mayoral, who found the net just 11 minutes into the encounter.

However, Celta responded before the interval with Borja Iglesias leveling the score.

The defining moment came in the 80th minute when Aspas stepped up with a crucial goal, completing the turnaround and sending the away fans into raptures.

Aspas fired home 10 minutes from time to seal the comeback win, putting his side ahead for the first time in the match after Getafe’s Borja Mayoral had put the hosts in front on 11 minutes.

Borja Inglesias equalised for Celta before half-time, but it was left for Aspas to send the travelling supporters into delirium with his winner.

Getafe’s night worsened when Domingos Duarte was dismissed in the final minute of regular time, as they closed out their campaign in 13th place with 42 points.

Meanwhile, Celta’s triumph saw them secure seventh position on the table with 55 points, edging Rayo Vallecano, who were held to a goalless draw by Mallorca despite dominating proceedings.

Vallecano finished eighth with 52 points and will compete in the UEFA Conference League next season.
