The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria in Kwara State has advised motorists to avoid travelling at night on high-risk roads due to ongoing security concerns across the country.
The state Chairman of the association, Abdulrahman Onikijipa, gave the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Ilorin.
Onikijipa said drivers should remain vigilant on highways and isolated roads, stressing that night journeys often expose travellers to greater security risks.
“As an association, we are taking the issue of kidnapping very seriously,” he said.
He explained that the union had intensified awareness campaigns to educate drivers on safety precautions through meetings and regular briefings across its branches.
“We have intensified sensitisation across our branches through regular meetings, drivers’ briefings and union platforms,” Onikijipa said.
“We emphasise the need for drivers to be conscious of their surroundings and prioritise alertness and vigilance while on the road.”
He further urged motorists to avoid travelling late at night, especially along routes known for security incidents.
“Drivers should avoid travelling at night, especially on high-risk and isolated routes, as most security incidents occur during late hours,” he added.
Onikijipa also advised drivers to confirm road conditions and obtain security updates before embarking on trips.
He encouraged motorists to travel with fully charged mobile phones, keep emergency contacts available and avoid picking up unknown passengers along highways or in isolated areas.
