The Kwara State Government has announced the immediate closure of schools across five local government areas in the Kwara South Senatorial District, citing growing security concerns.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, the government said the decision is part of a broader security strategy aimed at protecting schoolchildren from potential threats.
According to him, the affected LGAs include Ifelodun, Ekiti, Irepodun, Isin and Oke Ero.
“The state government has activated a proactive security measure as part of its efforts to guarantee a safer environment for school children,” the commissioner said.
Olohungbebe added that the step was taken to deter criminal elements, particularly kidnappers, who may attempt to use students as shields as security agencies intensify operations in the region.
“This measure underscores the determination of the government to curtail the activities of kidnappers who may want to use schoolchildren as human shields from renewed security crackdowns,” he stated.
He noted that the directive also applies to boarding schools in Irepodun LGA, which authorities believe could be targeted by criminals on the run.
“The measures also cover the boarding schools in Irepodun, which could be targets of the criminals who are running for cover amidst widening security operations,” he said.
The commissioner added that the temporary closure will remain in force until security agencies give clearance for normal academic activities to resume.
“The measure may remain in place while awaiting further security clearance for normal activities to resume,” he clarified.
