The Kwara State Government has directed tricycle operators in the state to revert to the previously approved daily levy of ₦700, following complaints of unauthorized increases by ticket collectors.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Lafia Korasabi, issued the directive during a meeting with the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria at the ministry’s headquarters in Ilorin.
Korasabi condemned the alleged overcharging, stressing that deviation from the agreed ticketing terms threatens order in the transport sector.
“Adherence to the agreed ticketing terms is central to maintaining harmony, fairness, and the welfare of all stakeholders,” he said.
He clarified that only ₦200 from the daily levy goes to the state government through the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, adding,
“The government should not be wrongly accused of overcharging transport operators.”
The commissioner instructed that the levy must return to ₦700, warning that any unauthorized increase will attract sanctions.
“Any arbitrary increase outside this agreement is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” he declared.
He cautioned that violators of the directive would face legal consequences, stating,
“Any individual found undermining this arrangement will face the full consequences of the law.”
Korasabi also reiterated the value the administration of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq places on transport workers, noting,
“We are committed to ensuring a fair operating environment that benefits both transporters and commuters.”
Supporting the commissioner’s position, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Salau Kabiru Abdullahi, urged union leaders to ensure compliance.
“Overcharging has created dissatisfaction and could lead to avoidable unrest if not promptly addressed,” he warned.
