Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has declared Thursday, June 26, 2025, a public holiday in celebration of the Islamic New Year, marking the beginning of 1447 AH (Anno Hegirae).
This announcement was made in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Wednesday. Governor AbdulRazaq congratulated Muslims across the state and urged reflection on the spiritual significance of the Hijrah—the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina.
“The Governor has graciously approved Thursday, the first of Muharram 1447, as a public holiday across the state in honor of the new Islamic calendar,” the statement read.
He called on the Muslim faithful and all residents to embrace the lessons of the Hijrah, which he described as symbolic of sacrifice, spiritual rebirth, and dedication to values that promote peaceful coexistence.
“Hijrah is a reminder of the virtues of patience, unity, and purposeful sacrifice. It teaches us to turn away from acts that threaten peace, justice, and communal harmony,” the governor was quoted as saying.
AbdulRazaq encouraged residents to foster dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding in their daily interactions. He also prayed that the new year brings lasting peace, joy, security, and prosperity to all households in Kwara.
“May this new Hijrah year usher in abundant blessings, stronger faith, and renewed commitment to building a better society,” he added.
