American reality television personality, Kim Kardashian, has been awarded €1 ($1.15) in compensation by a Paris court over the armed robbery she suffered in the French capital in 2016.
The symbolic compensation was the amount Kardashian had requested in connection with the incident, according to a lawyer involved in the case.
The court’s decision came after eight people were convicted last year for their roles in the robbery.
Kardashian and her stylist, Simone Harouche, who was also present during the incident, welcomed the outcome in a joint statement, saying the case was about accountability rather than financial compensation.
“The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us. Today’s decision is not about the compensation, but about accountability and recognition,” the statement to The Associated Press read.
“We are thankful to the Court and everyone who supported us throughout this process, and we hope to now move forward and continue to heal.”
Kardashian was staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès during Paris Fashion Week when two members of the gang, dressed as police officers, entered her suite.
They restrained her with zip ties and tape before escaping with jewellery worth more than $6m, including a diamond ring she had worn to a Givenchy show.
The former hotel receptionist who was involved in the incident was awarded €109,516 ($126,472) by the court.
He had sought €550,000 in damages and interest, with his lawyer, Mohand Ouidja, describing the ruling as a victory.
The hotel itself was awarded €50,000, while Harouche received €1.
The robbers, several of whom were in their 60s and 70s when they were tried, became known in France as “les papys braqueurs,” meaning “the grandpa robbers.” They faced charges including armed robbery, kidnapping and gang association.
Having already spent time in pretrial detention, none of those convicted returned to prison following the verdict, and none appealed the decision.
Following their conviction, Kardashian said she remained grateful to French authorities for pursuing the case.
“The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family,” the celebrity said. “While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all. I remain committed to advocating for justice and promoting a fair legal system.”
