Ambassador Nwankwo Kanu, fondly known as ‘Papilo’ and serving as the Executive Chairman of the Enyimba International Management Committee, has lauded the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, for initiating the ongoing transformation of the historic Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

The iconic stadium, a revered home ground for Enyimba FC, popularly called the People’s Elephant, is currently undergoing extensive renovation in preparation for the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season, which begins on August 22, 2025.

Kanu, a two-time African Footballer of the Year (1996 and 1999), expressed his profound appreciation for the state government’s efforts, describing the stadium facelift as both timely and strategic.

“Yeah, we are delighted with the renovation work currently going on at the Enyimba Stadium by His Excellency,” Kanu said during the sidelines of the 2nd edition of the Kanu U19 Football Tournament.

“Our Governor has always shown his willingness to deliver the dividends of democracy across all sectors, including sports. What he is doing now gives us both the morale and the infrastructure to push for greatness in the coming season.”

With the NPFL introducing stricter licensing and facility requirements for clubs, Kanu assured fans and stakeholders that Enyimba is fully prepared to not only meet these standards but to exceed expectations.

“I can assure you that the People’s Elephant will be ready with all the criteria prescribed by the NPFL ahead of the new season. We are not just getting ready to comply, we’re building to compete and conquer,” stated the former Arsenal forward.

Now in his second season overseeing the affairs at Enyimba, the former UEFA Champions League winner with Ajax Amsterdam reaffirmed the club’s intention to regain the NPFL title and secure a return to CAF Champions League action.

“We are working closely with all arms of the club, from technical to medical, from administration to supporters. Our goal is clear: win the league and return to African interclub competition where we belong.

“The passion is there, the planning is on course, and the vision is bold.”

Excitement is building across Aba as the season draws closer. With major upgrades underway, including improved facilities and the installation of a 500KVA generator to power the stadium scoreboard, Enyimba’s revival is in full swing.

Under the leadership of a globally respected football icon and with strong support from a proactive state government, the club is setting its sights not just on participation, but on total domination.
