Hon. Zubairu Hamza Masu, the member representing Sumaila Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.
In a resignation letter addressed to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore, and read during Monday’s plenary session, Masu attributed his decision to the internal crises rocking the NNPP. He highlighted factional disputes and ongoing litigations as key reasons for his departure.
The lawmaker specifically mentioned the leadership tussles within the party at both state and national levels. “There are multiple claims of leadership within the party at both state and national levels,” Masu stated in his letter, naming Dr. Suleiman Hashim Dungurawa and Senator Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa as the factional leaders at the state level, while identifying Dr. Ahmed Ajuji and Dr. Agbo Major as the contending leaders at the national level.
Hon. Masu’s resignation took effect from May 12, 2025. In his letter, he pledged his “full allegiance to the APC leadership at all levels,” signaling his commitment to his new party.
This defection comes weeks after reports indicated that Masu was among prominent NNPP members recently welcomed into the APC by the party’s national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. The move is seen as part of ongoing political realignments in Kano State ahead of future elections.
The NNPP has been embroiled in internal crises, with parallel executives and lawsuits creating divisions. Analysts suggest Masu’s exit may embolden other NNPP members to defect, potentially weakening the party’s structure in Kano, a key political battleground.
The APC, meanwhile, continues to consolidate its hold in the state, with Ganduje leading efforts to woo opposition figures.
