The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced that it resolved 621 marital-related disputes in 2024, alongside thousands of other social and criminal cases brought before it by members of the public.
Deputy Commander of the Board, Mujahid Ameen, disclosed this in an interview with Arewa PUNCH on Wednesday, noting that the agency recorded a total of 16,939 complaints during the year under review.
Out of these, 7,884 were resolved amicably, while 2,836 criminal cases were taken to court.
“We have received no fewer than 16,939 complaints of which 7,884 were resolved, while 2,836 criminal cases were arraigned in court,” Ameen explained.
He added that the board also handled upkeep and default loan cases amounting to over ₦212 million.
According to him, Hisbah’s mandate is not only to enforce morality but also to mediate disputes and foster peaceful coexistence.
“The Kano State Hisbah Board is an agency that stands firm in redirecting society to better citizenship, upholding good morals, and discouraging harmful behaviours such as lying, stealing, cheating, or violence,” he said.
“By promoting self-control and empathy, we help reduce social problems and support law and order.”
Highlighting the board’s social interventions, Ameen revealed that mass weddings were organised for 3,800 couples during the period.
He said the initiative was designed to curb prostitution and other immoral activities, particularly among widows, divorcees, and unmarried young women.
“We were able to successfully conduct mass weddings for 3,800 couples. The essence of this is to check prostitution and social vices, especially among divorcees, widows, and young spinsters,” he stated.
On institutional strengthening, Ameen disclosed that about 1,000 Hisbah guards were trained for better service delivery. He also said plans were underway for the establishment of a Hisbah Training Academy, increment of corps’ salaries, introduction of a retirement scheme, and reconstruction of the board’s headquarters.
“The state government considers that without morality, society would lack the standards needed to create peaceful, respectful, and responsible citizens,” he stressed. “Morality is like a compass that guides behaviour, helping individuals live in harmony and build a better future in accordance with Islamic values.”
