The Kano State Government has launched an official investigation into the alleged involvement of the Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Ibrahim Namadi, in securing bail for a suspected drug trafficker, Sulaiman Wawu.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf ordered the probe following widespread public outrage over claims that the Commissioner’s name appeared in documents reportedly used to facilitate the controversial release of the suspect, who was arrested on drug trafficking charges.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the state government reiterated its commitment to fighting drug abuse and promised to hold anyone found guilty accountable, regardless of their position.
“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains firm in its stance against any form of compromise in the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse,” the statement read. “No individual will be shielded if found culpable of undermining the law or endangering public safety.”
To ensure a fair and transparent investigation, the Governor has constituted a high-powered committee headed by his Special Adviser on Justice and Constitutional Matters, Aminu Hussain. The panel is expected to immediately look into the matter and submit its findings and recommendations.
Other members of the panel include Hamza Haladu, Hamza Nuhu Dantani, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud Umar, retired Maj. Gen. Sani Muhammad, Kabiru Said Dakata, and Hajiya Bilkisu Maimota, who will serve as the secretary.
Expressing his displeasure at the situation, Governor Yusuf warned against the abuse of public office, especially in sensitive matters such as drug-related crimes. “We will not tolerate any action that threatens the safety of our people or tarnishes the integrity of public institutions,” he said.
Although the Transport Commissioner is yet to respond to the allegations as of press time, the state government’s swift response has been seen by many as a signal of its determination to uphold justice and public accountability.
The incident has sparked serious concerns across the state, especially as Kano intensifies its anti-drug campaigns aimed at protecting youths from falling into crime and addiction. Governor Yusuf has frequently described drug abuse as one of the major threats to Kano’s future and security.
“This administration will act decisively to preserve the rule of law and restore public trust. Any act of political interference in criminal matters will be fully investigated and punished accordingly,” the governor’s spokesperson added.
