Japanese boxer, Shigetoshi Kotari, has tragically passed away at just 28 years old, following severe injuries sustained during his title match against Yamato Hata six days ago.
Kotari and Hata ended their clash for the OPBF super-featherweight crown in a draw, while Urakawa suffered a knockout defeat to Saito in the featherweight contest.
Kotari went the distance with Hata in a 12-round battle, each round lasting three minutes, aiming to claim the OPBF Super Featherweight championship.
The match ended in a draw, bringing Kotari’s record to eight victories, two draws, and two defeats.
After the fight on August 2, Kotari was urgently hospitalized and underwent emergency brain surgery to treat a subdural hematoma.
The procedure involved a craniotomy, which under Japanese boxing regulations, mandates immediate retirement.
Two days post-surgery, the Japan Boxing Commission reported that Kotari remained under close medical observation.
However, nearly a week after the bout, the commission has now announced through social media that the fighter has sadly lost his battle.
“Rest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari,” the statement read. “The boxing community mourns the loss of a brave warrior and spirited fighter who passed due to injuries from his August 2 title fight. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, team, and the entire Japanese boxing fraternity.”
