Jandor withdraws from Lagos APC gov race, backs Hamzat

A Lagos-based politician, Abdul-Azeez Adediran, widely known as Jandor, has stepped down from the 2027 governorship contest under the All Progressives Congress citing the need for party unity.

Jandor, who was the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, announced his decision on Thursday via a statement shared on his social media page, barely 24 hours after obtaining the APC nomination and expression of interest forms.

He explained that his withdrawal followed the endorsement of the state’s Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, by influential party leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“After careful consideration of recent developments within our party, particularly the endorsement of Dr. Kadiri Hamzat by our national leader and other stakeholders, I have decided to step aside from the race,” Jandor said.

He stressed that the move was a strategic decision aimed at preserving unity within the APC, rather than a reflection of his political strength or ambition.

“This decision is not a sign of weakness or lack of capacity. It reflects discipline, respect for leadership, and my commitment to the collective interest of our party,” he added.

Reaffirming his loyalty, Jandor pledged to support the party’s direction in Lagos and urged his supporters to remain steadfast.

“I remain fully committed to the ideals and progress of our great party. I urge all members of the Lagos4Lagos Movement and our supporters to stay united and aligned with the party’s vision,” he said.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments within the Lagos APC ahead of the 2027 governorship election. Party consultations, particularly involving the influential Governance Advisory Council, have intensified in recent weeks.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other party leaders had earlier thrown their weight behind Hamzat as a preferred successor, a position later reinforced during a meeting with the President in Abuja.

Political observers say Jandor’s withdrawal may further consolidate support for Hamzat, as the ruling party moves to present a united front ahead of the election cycle.
