Israel’s military reported the interception of a missile fired from Yemen on Tuesday, following air raid sirens that echoed across multiple regions, including Jerusalem.
“In response to the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in Israel, a missile that was launched from Yemen was intercepted,” read a statement issued by the Israeli army.
The projectile was believed to have been launched by Yemen’s Huthi rebels, who are backed by Iran and have repeatedly targeted Israel with missiles and drones since the eruption of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, triggered by a Hamas-led assault on Israel.
Just days earlier, on Saturday, the Huthis claimed responsibility for launching a ballistic missile aimed at Israel, citing retaliation for what they described as Israel’s treatment of Palestinians amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
This marked the first acknowledged missile strike from the Huthis since a ceasefire agreement on June 24 between Israel and Iran brought an end to a brief 12-day conflict.
Although the Huthis had observed a pause in their attacks during a two-month truce in Gaza earlier this year, they resumed their campaign after Israeli military operations recommenced.
In response to these attacks, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes on Huthi-controlled territories in Yemen, including key ports and the airport in the capital, Sanaa.
