The 19 Northern governors, in collaboration with chairmen of the Northern States Traditional Rulers Council, have called for immediate action to address the region’s worsening security situation.
The leaders issued this demand in a six-point communiqué following an emergency meeting convened by the Northern Governors’ Forum on Saturday in Kaduna.
During the crucial meeting, which focused primarily on security matters, the Forum emphasized the importance of non-partisan cooperation in tackling the region’s developmental challenges.
“The Forum commends Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his sustained commitment to addressing the security challenges and infrastructure deficits in Northern Nigeria,” the communiqué stated.
The governors resolved to work closely with the Nigerian Governors Forum to enhance support for federal security agencies.
“The Forum resolved to liaise with the Nigerian Governors Forum to work out modalities on how to increase support to the Federal Security Agencies,” the document read.
Additionally, the leaders agreed to strengthen local security initiatives across the region to combat various security threats.
A key resolution involved improving border security through coordinated interstate efforts. “The Forum also resolved to urgently set up inter-state platforms to coordinate surveillance on our joint borders,” the communiqué noted.
The meeting also reaffirmed strong support for establishing state police forces, urging the National Assembly to fast-track the necessary legislation.
“The Forum reiterated its support for the creation of State Police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” the statement concluded.
The resolutions come amid escalating security concerns across Northern Nigeria, where communities continue to face attacks from bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements. The Forum’s decisions reflect growing regional consensus on the need for more robust and coordinated security measures to protect lives and property.
