The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise will last for one year, ending on August 30, 2026.

The confirmation was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.

According to him, the nationwide in-person registration commenced on Monday across INEC’s 811 state and local government offices, following the launch of the online pre-registration portal on August 18, 2025.

“As at Sunday, 24th August 2025, a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians had successfully completed the online pre-registration process in just one week,” Olumekun disclosed.

He added that young Nigerians accounted for the bulk of registrants. “Out of this figure, 860,286 or 62.37 percent are between the ages of 18 and 34. Students also make up a significant proportion with 374,534, while persons with disability stand at 27,089,” he said.

Breaking down the gender composition, the commission revealed that 661,846 registrants (47.96 percent) are male, while 717,856 (52.04 percent) are female.

Olumekun advised eligible citizens to avoid last-minute rush, stressing that registration centres are usually overcrowded close to the deadline.

“The exercise will continue for one year until 30th August 2026. However, we urge all intending registrants not to wait until the final weeks when, from experience, the centres are inundated by eleventh-hour applicants,” he cautioned.

The electoral body also reminded the public that the registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 years and above who have not registered before.

“Double or multiple registration is illegal. However, transfers across states or within states, as well as replacement of lost or damaged voter cards, are allowed during the CVR,” Olumekun clarified.

INEC urged all eligible Nigerians to take advantage of both the online and physical registration options to ensure they are ready to participate in future elections.
