The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed Saturday, August 16, 2025, for the conduct of by-elections in several federal and state constituencies across Nigeria.

The announcement was made on Thursday by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with leaders of registered political parties in Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu explained that the by-elections are being held to fill legislative seats left vacant due to resignations, deaths, and court nullifications.

“In line with our constitutional and legal responsibilities, the Commission will conduct by-elections into affected National and State Assembly seats on Saturday, August 16,” Yakubu said. “We urge political parties to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable and ensure transparent and peaceful primaries.”

He noted that the Commission would soon publish the full schedule and affected constituencies.

An official who attended the meeting told journalists, “The Commission wants to ensure that no constituency remains without representation for longer than necessary. These by-elections are crucial to strengthening democratic governance.”

Yakubu also emphasized the importance of political parties preparing early and complying with the guidelines to avoid legal disputes.

He reassured stakeholders of INEC’s commitment to credible and inclusive polls.
