Ijebu-Ode markets to reopen as council denies 75-day closure rumour

All major markets in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, including Ita Osu, Ita Ale, and Oke Aje, will reopen for business on Monday, July 21, 2025.

According to The PUNCH, this follows a temporary closure in honour of the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who recently passed away.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Dare Alebiosu, in a statement issued on Sunday.

Alebiosu clarified that the markets were closed as part of the traditional mourning rites but dismissed circulating reports claiming a 75-day shutdown was imposed.

“There was never any directive to shut down markets for 75 days. That information is entirely false,” Alebiosu stated.

“The closure was a mark of respect to our departed royal father, and we thank everyone for their patience and understanding during this solemn period.”

The local government noted that the decision to reopen the markets was reached after consultations with traditional authorities and other key stakeholders.

According to the statement, “Following the peaceful transition of our highly revered royal father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona GCON, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, the leadership of Ijebu Ode Local Government, in consultation with relevant traditional authorities, respectfully observed the customary mourning period in honour of the Orisa of Ijebuland.”

Alebiosu emphasized that the reopening was aimed at restoring economic activities while continuing to honour the late monarch’s legacy.

“This decision was made to strike a balance between honouring our departed king and ensuring that our people do not continue to suffer undue economic hardship,” he explained. “We remain committed to maintaining order, tradition, and the welfare of all Ijebu sons and daughters.”

The council chairman also lauded the residents, traders, and market associations for their cooperation and adherence during the mourning period.
