The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has launched a Special Protection Unit aimed at providing security for elites across the country.

This initiative comes in response to a growing demand for enhanced protective services for high-profile individuals.

The Commander of SPU Base 23 in Minna, CSP Hassan Sani, revealed during the passing-out ceremony of 50 personnel that the unit was specially formed by the police leadership to cater to elite security needs.

“The SPU is a newly formed unit designed to respond to the increasing need for elite protection in Nigeria,” Sani said.

He explained that the personnel underwent intensive two-week training, which included modules on VIP protection, escort and convoy operations, firearms handling, combat parades, martial arts, self-defence, first aid, and basic firefighting techniques.

“The training was tailored to instill discipline and develop the practical skills required to deliver professional security services,” he added.

The event, held at the premises of Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi International Conference Centre in Minna, also featured the donation of 25 operational vehicles by the Niger State Government to support police patrols in major towns across the state.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, who addressed the graduating officers, commended the IGP for setting up the unit and providing the necessary training.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and supporting security agencies in the state.

“We are donating 25 vehicles to boost patrol and mobility for the police command. In addition, we are working with the Nigeria Police to construct new barracks on the outskirts of Minna to strengthen security coverage in all corners of the state capital,” Governor Bago stated.

He congratulated the graduating officers and urged them to carry out their duties with integrity and professionalism. “Your role is critical in ensuring the safety of our leaders and citizens alike. We trust that the skills you’ve acquired will be put to good use,” he said.
