IG bans unauthorised social media content creation by police officers

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to refrain from engaging in unauthorised social media activities, including content creation and live streaming, warning that such actions could undermine the Force’s professionalism and public image.

The directive was issued amid growing concerns over the increasing participation of serving police officers in online video productions, live broadcasts and other social media content while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Force without official approval.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Okokon Iniedu, the IGP acknowledged the importance of social media as a tool for communication and public engagement but stressed that its use must align with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.

According to the statement, officers are prohibited from producing or sharing unauthorised content while in police uniform, making public comments on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police personnel for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial purposes.

“He noted that officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in police uniform, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial gain,” the statement said.

To ensure compliance, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police, departmental heads and other supervisory officers to sensitise personnel under their commands and enforce strict adherence to the directive.

He also warned that senior officers would be held responsible for failing to address violations within their areas of supervision.

“Supervisory officers will be held accountable for failure to take appropriate action against violations within their areas of responsibility,” the statement added.

The police chief further instructed the Force Intelligence Department and the X-Squad of the Professional Standards Department to strengthen monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers whose online conduct falls short of professional standards.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible communication, noting that the directive is intended to reinforce public confidence and safeguard the institution’s integrity.
