IAEA to hold emergency meeting as US attack Iran

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, announced on Sunday that the agency’s Board of Governors will hold an emergency meeting on Monday in response to the recent United States airstrikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities.

Grossi, in a post shared via X, said the urgent gathering was prompted by the “serious escalation” following coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel on critical Iranian nuclear sites, including those at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.

Tensions between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog have intensified, with Iranian officials accusing Grossi of issuing “inflammatory and contradictory” remarks, which they claim helped fuel Israel’s initial offensive on their nuclear infrastructure.

Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization has also lashed out at the IAEA, accusing it of turning its mandate into a political tool and failing to stop what it described as “illegal aggression against peaceful facilities.”

The meeting, set to take place in Vienna, will center on assessing nuclear contamination risks, implications for the global non-proliferation framework, and strategies for safeguarding Iran’s remaining nuclear assets amid the current hostilities.

It remains unclear whether representatives from Iran or the United States will be present at the emergency session.
