Hit-and-run driver arrested after Lagos pedestrian death

A Nissan Jeep with registration number KJA 354 ET was intercepted at the Ogudu flyover bridge, inward Ifako, Lagos, after it struck a pedestrian and attempted to flee the scene.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

Bakare-Oki revealed that instead of rendering aid to the critically injured victim, the driver made a brazen attempt to escape.

He said LASTMA operatives, strategically positioned in the area, acted swiftly to intercept and apprehend the suspect.

The officers also coordinated the urgent rescue and medical evacuation of the gravely injured pedestrian. “Unfortunately, the wounded pedestrian died,” Bakare-Oki stated.

According to him, the crash occurred when the driver, in a bid to outmaneuver a heavily laden articulated truck, lost control and hit the unsuspecting pedestrian.

He added that the suspect was promptly handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division, who reinforced the rescue operation with crucial law enforcement support.

“The mangled vehicle was later evacuated by LASTMA personnel and conveyed to Ogudu Police Division for thorough investigation,” Bakare-Oki added.

He further cautioned motorists against speeding and reckless driving, emphasizing that such actions put not only drivers but also pedestrians and other innocent road users at risk.
