The Guinean Football Federation has moved to dispel what it called misleading reports surrounding the final phase of the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations involving Morocco’s Atlas Lions.
Speculation had recently emerged in some media reports and across social platforms claiming Guinea might contest the result of its clash with Morocco at the tournament, with allegations that the Guinean side walked off the pitch during the encounter.
However, the federation has categorically denied any such move.
“The Guinean Football Federation informs the national and international public that it has not initiated any procedure either with the Court of Arbitration for Sport or with CAF in relation to the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations,” the statement said.
FGF described the circulating claims as unfounded, stressing that they lack any official backing, while also urging caution and professionalism in reporting.
The federation further used the opportunity to restate the accurate account of the match.
The fixture between Guinea and Morocco took place on March 14, 1976, in Addis Ababa. Guinea went ahead in the 33rd minute through Souleymane Cherif, before Morocco drew level late on, with Ahmed Makrouh, also known as “Baba,” scoring in the 86th minute to secure a 1-1 draw.
FGF explained that understanding the tournament’s structure at the time is essential, noting that there was no conventional final match.
“In accordance with the regulations in force at the time, the competition did not include a classic final,” the federation said. “The qualified teams played a final group, and the ranking directly determined the winner.”
Morocco ultimately topped the final group standings to claim the continental title, while Guinea finished as runners-up.
By clarifying both the match details and the competition format, the federation has effectively dismissed claims of a walk-off as well as suggestions of any legal action being pursued.
