Renowned gospel artist, Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, fondly known as New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53, leaving a profound void in Benue State’s Christian and musical communities.

The news of his death has sent waves of grief across the state, particularly among those who admired his remarkable transformation of Tiv Swange music into a soul-stirring tool for evangelism.

Leading the outpouring of tributes was former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, who paid a condolence visit to the late singer’s Makurdi residence.

Accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group, Ortom described Ikyereve as a deeply committed follower of Christ whose musical ministry echoed across borders.

“His songs touched my heart as a lover of Christ,” Ortom said. “That attraction led me to seek a personal relationship with him, which began a lasting bond with his family.”

Ortom shared a touching memory of hearing Ikyereve’s music during an international programme in Australia, where a Tiv man teaching music used the artist’s songs in his lessons.

According to the former governor, it was a striking reminder of the far-reaching influence of New Jerusalem’s ministry.

He extended heartfelt prayers to the bereaved family and assured them of his continued support, promising to stand by them and the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe even after the funeral.

Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, elder brother of the deceased, speaking on behalf of the family, expressed deep appreciation for Ortom’s consistent support during Israel’s illness and after his passing.

He revealed that in recognition of the former governor’s kindness, one of the late singer’s sons was named “Ortom.”

Prayers during the visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo, both key figures in the Brethren Prayer Group.

The late gospel luminary is survived by his wife and fellow gospel artist, Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and numerous relatives.

His burial is slated for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
